It might sound cheesy, but since we started dating, Chris and I have said we’re like peanut butter and jelly – the perfect duo. It’s always been a silly joke between us, but it ended up being the theme for our wedding ceremony.
When we met with our wedding officiant to go over vows, Chris shocked me. Instead of doing unity sand or anything similar, he suggested that we actually make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and eat it in front of our guests.
When he brought it up, I thought it would be overly tacky and silly, but our officiant and wedding planner immediately hopped on board. Our officiant was amazed by Chris – she said that in 40 years of performing weddings, she had seen a lot of unique and fun ceremonies, but no one had ever symbolized their marriage by making a sandwich. We laughed at the whole idea, but after that, I was sold.
Before I knew it, our peanut butter and jelly themed ceremony was happening.
We had 4 bridesmaids, 4 groomsmen, and our kids walking as the flower girls and ring bearer. The above photo is my absolute favourite. It’s Chris’ crying face – the one he made when he first saw me in my dress. I’ll never forget that moment and I’m so happy that our photographer was able to capture it.
Within 15 minutes, we were married! We decided not to write our own vows, but keep it simple and sweet with pre-written ones. We exchanged rings and kissed all while our girls cried beside us.
Before we signed the papers, there was just one more thing we had to do – make our sandwich.
Before the wedding, our amazing coordinator set up a crystal tray with two perfect pieces of bread, two knives, and two small mason jars filled with peanut butter and jelly (raspberry if you must know).
Not only was the PB & J idea so us, it fit with our pink and gold theme perfectly. We even managed to find mini gold-topped mason jars to fit the decor.
Our officiant instructed us to apply the peanut butter and jelly to the bread, put the pieces together, and each take a bite. We laughed like little kids while we made the sandwich and even harder when took a bite in front of everyone. Even writing this post seems cheesy to me, but it’s something I’ll never forget.
Right after we joined our pieces of bread and ate our sandwich, we signed our marriage certificate.
Another fun thing we did was make a space for our kids to sign. I’m so happy we did this, because I get to keep the piece of paper for the rest of our lives
And just like that, it was over. We were married. Our PB & J sandwich was officially created. We became Mr. and Mrs. Wigle!
The best part of our peanut butter and jelly themed wedding was hearing everyone talk about it later. We had such an amazing reaction from our family and friends! As crazy and funny as it was, everyone pointed out that it was unique. They had never been to another wedding where the bride and groom truly did their own thing. It made me so proud.
Our kids will also never forget this moment. Whenever we talk about our wedding, our girls make a point of bringing up the PB & J. It’s an amazing memory they’ll always have, which makes me know we did the right thing. My husband is brilliant!
