A friend of mine had a very specific requests for her son’s birthday party! I wanted to keep it as simple as possible and managed to get it done.
Here’s my simple Thomas the train cake!
I used a large rectangle pan to bake a standard sheet cake, and baked a Thomas the train mold separately. I then added this molded cake right on top to make a super tall cake!
The Thomas the Train cake pan that I used is available on Amazon, but I rented mine from my local Bulk Barn store. Always check your area for cake pan rentals before purchasing an expensive pan you’ll only use once.
After the cake was assembled, I used buttercream to frost the entire thing and a star tip to create the design. It was very simple and easy to do, just a little bit time consuming as all star tipped designs are.
The best part of this cake is how big it is! This cake could easily feed 50 people, whereas the molded cake alone could maybe feed 10. I also love how adding the 3D molded cake on top of a regular cake adds dimension to the character. It looks like Thomas is really coming to life!
